A tragic incident unfolded at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, when a 15-year-old student, identified as Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, opened fire during a study hall session on Monday morning. The shooting resulted in the death of another student and a teacher, while six others were injured, two of them critically.
The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. local time at the K-12 school, which has approximately 400 students. Authorities arrived at the scene within three minutes of receiving a 911 call, reportedly made by a second-grader in a nearby classroom. The shooter, Rupnow, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead en route to the hospital.
The two other fatalities were pronounced dead at the scene. Of the six injured, two students are in critical condition, while the other four, including three students and a teacher, are stable. Two of the injured were released from the hospital by Monday evening.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes stated that there were no clear warning signs that suggested violence would occur at the school. The shooter’s family is cooperating with law enforcement, and investigators are reviewing a possible manifesto that might have belonged to Rupnow.
The school, which does not have metal detectors or a school resource officer, was divided into sections by age groups. Barnes noted that there was no evidence of anyone outside the shooter’s age group being injured, suggesting that the victims were likely teenagers and their teachers.
The incident has left the school and the wider community in shock. Parents were reunited with their children following the chaos, and school official Barbara Wiers stated that the shooting has “rocked our school community.” She praised the students for handling the situation “magnificently.”
The shooting occurred just two days after the 12th anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting and follows a similar incident at a Nashville-area Christian school in March 2023. President Biden called the latest school shooting “shocking and unconscionable” and urged Congress to pass stricter gun laws.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers expressed his prayers for the school community and gratitude for the quick response of first responders. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives assisting local law enforcement.
